Bones mature on different schedules: the carpal (wrist) bones take shape mainly in early childhood, the finger joints (DIP, PIP, MCP) mature through puberty, and the distal radius and ulna are the last to fuse. A region a year or more ahead of or behind the others may be worth a clinician's attention.
